Key Concepts and Principles
Oak Brook Montessori School is committed to promoting quality Montessori education for all children from 3 to 6 years of age. Montessori education for all children is based on the following key concepts.
- Foster autonomous, competent, responsible, adaptive citizens who are life-long learners and problem solvers
- Learning occurs in an inquisitive, cooperative, and nurturing atmosphere. Students increase their own knowledge through self and teach-initiated experiences.
- Learning takes place through the senses. Students learn through manipulating materials and interacting with others. These meaningful experiences are precursors to the abstract understanding of ideas.
- The individual is considered as a whole. The physical, emotional, social aesthetic, and cognitive needs and interests are inseparable and equally important.
- Respect for oneself, others, the environment, and life is necessary to develop a caring attitude toward people and the planet.
The Montessori teacher is educated in the following areas- Human growth and development.
- Observational skills which enable the teacher to match the student's developmental needs with materials and activities. These skills help the teacher guide students in creating each child's individual plans of learning.
- An open-ended array of suggested learning materials and activities that empower teachers to design a developmentally responsible, culturally relevant learning environment.
- Teaching strategies that support and facilitate the unique and total growth of each individual.
- Classroom leadership skills that foster a nurturing environment that is physically and psychologically supportive of learning.

Welcome to the Oakbrook Montessori School
The Oak Brook Montesoori school established in 1972 by Meher F. Ali, an elementary teacher who was seeking a better educational system for her own young children. She studied the Montessori method and started a preschool for children 3 to 6 years of age, based upon the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.
Oak Brook Montessori School is accredited by the American Montessori Society. Our teachers are dedicated and experienced professionals with a wide variety of educational backgrounds including Montessori certification and Illinois State teaching degrees.
Objective
In her book, The Absorbent Mind, Dr. Montessori wrote, "The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six, the time when man's intelligence is being formed."
The Montessori approach to learning emphasizes each child's dignity, freeing potential for self-development in a rich and responsive environment. Montessori is a unique philsophy based on a child's innate desire to learn as well as the need for intellectual stimulations and direction. Parents, children, and teachers form a loving community and a family. We believe parents and teachers working together will obtain the best results for our children."
A Montessori environment will:- Encourage self-exploration and self-discovery.
- Help develop motivation and confidence.
- Realize potential when children pursue interests at their own pace.
- Provide quality educational and day care services to preschool children and their families.
